Launch Day Blog - Day 1

Today I launch Before it Fades.

It wasn't supposed to be today. This was never meant to be a dramatic launch or a carefully choreographed moment. It started as an idea quietly sitting in the background - something I kept telling myself I'd properly launch at "some point in the future".

But thanks to Dan at Metcalf Media - who turned a loose vision into a website quicker and better than I expected - today suddenly felt like as good a day as any. And given the date, it feels oddly perfect. May the Fourth seems appropriate.

Where the idea came from

The idea behind Before it Fades began at least fifteen years ago. I've always loved people - their stories, their humour, the strange and wonderful paths that shape a life. Back then I thought this was for "older people". Then I became older, and I realised something important.

This isn't about age. It's about legacy. Sharing stories, experiences, lessons, and personality with the people who matter - and with anyone curious enough to witness a life well lived.

Over time, the idea evolved. What if someone had a terminal illness? What about dementia? What about capturing memories before they slip away? And then the bigger realisation arrived.

What if this was simply for everyone?

That was the moment Before it Fades truly began.

The early sessions

Over the past months I've trialled sessions with family and friends, refined the process, changed the product, improved my own standards. Eventually I worked with paying clients. Those first sessions were among the most nerve-wracking days of my otherwise ridiculously self-confident life - but they turned out to be some of the most meaningful experiences I've had.

Being trusted with deeply personal memories is not something I take lightly. Sitting with someone as they reflect on their life - guiding conversations that move from laughter to quiet reflection and back again - then delivering something that genuinely matters to a family? Extraordinary privilege.

I've had plenty of terrible ideas in my life. This isn't one of them.

The moment that stayed with me

The feedback that stayed with me most came from a lovely gentleman who told me: "I just left it on the coffee table and the conversations it started with friends and family were just brilliant."

I hadn't fully considered that part. I assumed its greatest value might come later - for future generations. But what I discovered is even better. These sessions spark conversations now. They bring stories into the room while everyone is still there to laugh, question, remember, and enjoy them together. That felt like a huge win.

Thank you

Along the way I've received advice, encouragement, challenge, and belief from friends across all walks of life - CEOs, marketing professionals, photographers, and people who simply know me well enough to tell me the truth when needed. Your support has been phenomenal. I'm deeply grateful.

I believe in constant improvement. I like being busy. But more than anything? I love people. If Before it Fades allows me to help people document, preserve and share their stories, it will be one of the greatest privileges of my life.

And yes - the photographs are pretty good too.

What next

If you're curious, take a look around the website. If you know someone whose stories deserve preserving, send them this link. Or just browse - that's fine too.

There are already a million ideas forming about where this could go next. For now, though - one step at a time. Let's see what happens.

Diolch yn fawr.
